Recognizing the Signs of Trauma

Do you often feel hopeless, angry, anxious, or depressed?
Are you overwhelmed by feelings of shame or worthlessness?

  • Do you experience flashbacks, nightmares, persistent anxiety, or panic attacks?

  • Do you anticipate the worst, even when life seems to be going well?

  • Are you constantly on high alert?

  • Distrustful of others, or even of yourself?

If any of the above resonates with you, trauma may be the underlying cause, preventing you from fully enjoying and appreciating your life.

Types of Trauma

Traumas or attachment injuries can manifest in numerous ways, including:

  • Military combat

  • Sexual abuse

  • Childhood maltreatment

However, trauma isn't always linked to such overtly distressing events. It can also arise from:

  • Bullying

  • Sudden loss of a loved one

  • A neglectful or absent parent

  • Witnessing violence or abuse

  • Intense family stress

Regardless of the cause, traumatic experiences can alter our perceptions of ourselves, others, relationships, and the world at large.

The Impact of Trauma on the Mind and Body

Your internal survival system may have developed specific strategies to cope with the traumatic event(s). Although these were helpful in the past, they can become destructive in the present, affecting both yourself and your relationships.

Your trauma responses can be quite unpredictable, varying greatly. You may react with anger and frustration in some cases, while in others, you might withdraw and become unresponsive. When faced with such varying reactions, it is natural to wonder, "What's wrong with me?

Together, we will identify the root cause(s) of your distress to heal those parts, allowing you to find the inner peace you have been seeking.

You can find peace and healing, gain control of your life, and breathe.

Depending on your needs, I will utilize treatments like EMDR, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS), which are all trauma-informed treatments that can help you gently reprocess the disturbing events that happened to you.

The Results can be Incredible.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based technique that can help heal trauma by reprocessing these events. When someone goes through a traumatic event, it can get stuck in their brain, causing images, sounds, smells, and feelings to trigger their fight, flight or freeze response. EMDR promotes healing by processing the trauma in a way that allows your brain to heal naturally.

After undergoing EMDR therapy, many people report that the traumatic event no longer evokes as much distress as it did before. They still remember what happened, but the memory is less emotionally charged and does not trigger strong reactive behaviors.
